About this Course
The aim of the course is to build on an individual engagement practitioner’s capability to work with conflict in engagement processes, including recognising people’s behaviours, developing personal practitioner skills and using appropriate facilitation tools.
The three areas of focus are:
- Recognising people’s behaviours and emotions and why they occur in conflict situations.
- Developing individual skills and abilities to manage the participant’s own responses in conflict situations and fulfil the practitioner’s role.
- Using tools and/or strategies to facilitate engagement processes where conflict is present.

- People new to community and stakeholder engagement who want to build a strong foundation in engagement principles, frameworks and practical skills.
- Practitioners wanting to strengthen or refresh their knowledge using current best practice approaches and contemporary engagement methods.
- Professionals working in or alongside engagement teams who want to better understand effective engagement and contribute with greater confidence.
- Those working towards the Certificate of Engagement and progressing through the IAP2 training pathway.
- Professionals considering a career in engagement or expanding their skills into community and stakeholder engagement.
- Professionals in related fields such as planning, engineering, communications, environment, infrastructure, local government, project management and community development who regularly engage with stakeholders as part of their role.
Learning Outcomes
- Define conflict and identify its triggers
- Explain people’s responses to conflict situations and what may be underlying behaviour
- Describe the engagement practitioner’s role in conflict situations
- Better understand your own responses to conflict and how to stay resourceful in the face of conflict.
